Although Iron Maiden were already poised to break through in the big movement of "NWOBHM" (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), they hit a snag after their widely-successful "Killers" album. Namely that snag was the falling-out of vocalist Paul Di'Anno, and once he departed many questioned the band's future. What must be seen as one of the biggest turning points for any band's career, along came vocalist Bruce Dickinson, a relative unknown who would go on to help define the band as one of the best pure metal acts ever to be. And he started off with his new bandmates in a flash; "The Number Of The Beast" is just that, a beast of an album that is heavy with memorable riffing, and epic, soaring vocals. The title track is one of the first metal songs that really struck at mainstream single charts, which put the band in the same leagues as Judas Preist and Black Sabbath. "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "Children Of The Damned" and "Run To The Hills" are some of the best works in Maiden's arsenal. This album is 90% killer, 10% filler and falls just short of being Maiden's best. That pinnacle would come a short time later...
