I agree, not enough writers today take a chance on the unknown, however thats the burning spirit of MusicEmisssions.com. WE are constantly digging for the next unknown talent. Emzy is just another artist we ran across on herdspace who does in fact have a distinct sound. Odd you wrote a review about this...One of our staff writers Sean Collins (no relation, lol) was just commenting on the staff board that he will be reviewing it. Great review..

For music critics, one of the biggest thrills appears to be in developing a list of musicians and bands that they believe to be "the next big thing." These types of features and articles can be seen every year in nearly every music publication. In theory, this is a great idea. Who wouldn't want to be made aware of a band that is destined for stardom? But in my observation, most of these lists fail greatly in one area—they play it safe. It seems that many of the bands and musicians that get featured have already achieved a certain level of success, and surmising that one of the acts will actually break into mainstream success is not a difficult prediction for the writer to make. Just once, I would like to see a writer take a chance and choose a band or musician that little is known about—someone who is only just beginning. Yes, to take a chance on the indications of three songs. The three tracks featured on "nothing yet" seem to showcase an artist that has a natural talent. Sure, there are rough spots, but it's rare to achieve perfection the first time around on anything. The warm synths and skittering piano notes immediately drew me into "feel your love." Then, greeted by the vocals, the track took full shape. Overall, the song had a nice floating feeling to it. The second track, "what it feels like," started out with a much darker tone that comes as a stark contrast following the end of the first song. Here, the vocals seemed a bit gravelly to match the style of the song. While I appreciate some of the ideas that were attempted in this song, it almost feels like too much. However, the strings at the end of the track lend a perfect introduction to the beginning of the last song, "sleep well." It is a stripped down song that primarily highlights the vocal performance. Accompanied only by what sounds like an electric organ, this track really stood out. Whether or not emzy.collins will one day appear on one of those "next big thing" lists remains to be seen. But, it shouldn't really take a list to tell someone that in the first place. If the music is good and original, that's enough for me.
