Do you remember the name Brendan Benson? I really don’t think many people do. But this singer/songwriter had a major label release called One Mississippi out on Virgin and although critics loved it, it sold poorly and Brendan was left without a label. In the last 5 years he has been figuring out what his next move should be. He got his good friend Jason Falkner back to co-write some killer power-pop songs and found a label that could relate to him (starTime), and put out his sophomore album called Lapalco. This album doesn’t differ much from his debut (which was also mostly co-written by Falkner) except for being turned down a slight notch. His Beatlesque harmonies are superb on most of the tracks and the arrangements are well thought out. Matthew Sweet would do himself a favour in checking out Benson’s songwriting process. Again, it’s impossible to pick a favorite on Lapalco because my favorite changes with each listen. Brendan Benson has provided us with yet another classic. Not sure if you can still get One Mississippi but if you can find, pick that one up too.
