Jason Isbell's first album after leaving the Drive By Truckers is quite a change from his days with the Truckers. For one, "Sirens of the Ditch" is alot more mellow and relaxed. Two of his songs, "Dress Blues" and Chicago Promenade" are about people he knew that had passed away. In "Dress Blues" Isbell sings about a High School friend that was killed in Iraq. With a simple, soft beat and a slide guitar he makes you feel as if the Marine was your friend. In "Chicago Promenade" Isbell talks about his grandfather who passed away while he was on tour in Chicago. The piano riff dominates this song. While his other songs are a little more up beat than these two, I think they take the pie. This album is worth the buy because of the obvious growing capabilities of Jason Isbell's songwriting, and his ability to adapt and grow with new styles of music in every song, combining Blues, Southern Rock, and maybe even a hint of folk, this album is well-worth the buy
