Harry Manx could easily be considered a master at the slide guitar but to stop there wouldn't do justice for his other instrumental skills such as harmonica, banjo and others. Wise and Otherwise is his sophomore album and he proves that his first album was indeed no fluke. Most of the compositions on this disc are penned by Manx himself but the covers that he picks are very thoughtfully picked out. Take for instance the beautiful rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" and B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" to name a couple. The magic on Wise and Otherwise may have something to do with the time that Harry has spent over in India. You can hear these influences blatantly on "Death Have Mercy" and "Raga Nat Bhariav". Another reason for the magic on this album may be the fact that it was recorded on the mystical Salt Spring Island of the coast of British Columbia. It is a place where many people go to find their meaning in life. Manx has just moved onto my list of "artists to see live".
