Down With the Butterfly (which I hope is more of a revolutionary battle cry than a nineties-type mantra: "You down with the butterfly, son?") play an interestingly disjointed rock and roll that borrows heavily from psychedelic and glam, with a healthy dose of the aforementioned nineties. The music is weird and sometimes a bit tedious, but almost always engaging. This album, entitled Rise, flows easily from rockers that sound almost like a love child between Rage Against the Machine and today’s glut of post-punk ("Work, Sleep, Rise") to slow pulsing rhythmic numbers ("Stanley‘s Theory"), and even peaceful melancholia ridden shoe gazing anthems (my personal favorites, "Sigh" and "Tank"). While sometimes inconsistent, the second half of the album, which is easily the better half, takes on a contemplative edge while retaining a pleasant forward motion. Despite their questionable name, another album and some decent exposure (like a review by a seventeen year old on an internet music community--get it?!) should help them land a nice place in your local alt rock station’s new lineup.
