I wanted to review one of Lamb of God's albums but I had a tough choice deciding which one I should do. My two favorites are Ashes of the Wake as well as New American Gospel, the introduction to this great metal band. But Ashes kept niggling at me to review it so here it goes. And I know I'm a little late getting into these guys but if you are a metal fan, chances are that you've come across Lamb Of God on a live bill or on a playlist somewhere.
Originally known as Burn The Priest, Lamb Of God would make the decision to move towards the major labels with Ashes Of The Wake, their 2004 effort with Epic taking the risk on this dark metal album. I find Lamb of God a little hard to categorize other than just plain heavy metal. They don't rely on screamo type vocals, instead Randy Blythe just has a heavy style of singing that brings this band almost bordering on Death Metal. I think that is what made me choose this album over New American Gospel. Randy's vocals changed ever so slightly but for the better.
"Omerta" is a testament to their abilities. It's not fast by any means but damn, this is heavy. You want fast, check out the next track "Blood On The Scribe".
I know many people think Lamb Of God may have sold out on Ashes but I would suggest that they took the route to further their fanbase. There is no compromise here. It's a great album and one of the best metal albums in recent years.

LoG were a band of limitless potential after their 2nd LP "As The Palaces Burn" catapulted them into the metal limelight across the world. Whether or not this pressure caused some sort of shock to their sound, "Ashes Of The Wake" feels like a weakened, watered-down dose of what the band had been serving up in the past. While retaining many measures of full-on, in-your-face agression and much of the same sound picture from previous albums, Ashes does has some quality moments. They're just spread too thin. Also of note are the all too predictable metal lyric leanings; political/anti-bush trite we've all no doubt heard more than enough of. This album marked the end of LoG as an underground force and the beginning of the selling of a product. This could be seen as LoG's black album in that way.
