The new breed of progressive metal grindcore has been here for a while, so what am I supposed to say when a new band shows up outta no where with a name like What's He Building In There? (based on a Tom Waits composition) Well for one, they're raw, and fairly unique for such a beaten down genre.  For another, they're as A.D.D. in their guitar progressions as you're gonna come across.  All the while the lead vocalist Chris Schroeder still manages to have a rare Jason Ross (Seven Mary Three) and Mike Patton tone to him at times.

But far and above the chords and outright chaos of the intstrumentation is almost worth the lone purchase and effort of this album.  It's rare moments that you're album to breathe.  Their first video and closing track, Avian Taxi has an intro Alexisonfire on fire would create, and eventually the vocals come in similiar to AOF.  But just as AOF might use that point in the track to slow it down a bit, WHBIT takes the flood of sound and digs further down.  Eventually they do take moments in this track and thats when the SOAD fans will dig their styles.  Everything's quiet except for spoken word and some finger fretting, only to give back to the style of heart pounding bass and drums.

More than anyone these guys remind me buttloads of The Sound Of Animals Fighting, and it doesn't take a group of all-stars from other bands to create it.  My suggestion, if you're in search of that thrashing progressive metal, Waterloo, Ontario's What's He Building In There? should halt your search dead in its tracks.

I took a listen--and was reminded heavily of my grindcore fan friend and his iPod.

I wouldnt be able to give this album an actually rating, since i have not listened to the whole thing, but I do know from this track i'm listening to right now, 'Avian Taxi' that im going to pick up a copy of this album when it is released. I give these guys a standing ovation, because this sounds amazing. This band does seem like shades of TSOAF, but in a more hardcore fashion. Im previewing the next track over their myspace right now, and i'm very happy with what iam hearing. All i can say is that i'm stoked about a release from these guys.
