Frank Black is doing the Tom Waits thing here and releasing not one but two albums of original material all at once. Devil’s Workshop has an edge over the gritty Black Letter Days but only if you aren’t in the mood for gritty. Both of the albums are impressive. Frank has had some hit and miss but Devil’s Workshop is indeed mostly hit. Not as in your face as Dog In The Sand, he ventures down a little more accessible roadways. Take for instance “ His Kingly Cave, a track that would be a welcome relief to the drivel on the radio these days. He sings this song more matter-of-factly than we are used but it really works. Devil’s Workshop is more straight forward than Black Letter Days. Don’t worry because Black still rocks out on some tracks but this is the Catholics time to have fun, and fun is what they have.
