Driver Side Impact is a new band signed by Victory Records. And this, The Very Air We Breathe, is their debut from this record label. Victory Records is sort of known for rushing albums to be released, but usually, that was never a factor in determining whether the album was good or bad. They might have found an oasis of potential with this band. The band reminds me a little bit of Downtown Singapore, which is kind of a good thing.
The album starts off with a small introduction. I believe it's supposed to be like the surround sound introduction you hear before a movie begins. Then right after that track ends, the second song leads you in with a drum beat, into a great guitar riff. The lyrics are intelligent and they relate to maybe a friend or someone even closer not listening to you or being there for you. How you want that person to be there more than others, but they aren't there at all. This track really is a beautiful song, but the chorus can become annoying with the repetition of "your soul can be". The rest of the song is still solid, it's just little repetitions that make you think, 'couldn't they have said something else?'.
The songs that stuck out to me the most after the first listen were 'Made of Gold', 'Cowboys And Indians' and 'Our Lives In slow Motion'. Both are beautiful songs that have all of the parts of this band contributing its own part. For example, in some songs you don't really hear the keyboard at all, but with both of these songs, all of the instruments are in full effect. The song 'Our Lives In Slow Motion' sounds a LOT like the song 'Buried A Lie' by Senses Fail during the chorus all the way to the beginning of the outro. They seem to have the same structure, but Driver Side Impact really pulls it off well. 'Cowboys And Indians' is just a very good song to listen to and bob your head to. They keep the beat down well in this song, and the vocals are okay as well. Well done, and simply magnificent to listen to. To be completely honest with all of you who read this, the album just gets better as you progress through the tracks. While you may think that it sounds okay for a debut, when you get down to the last couple songs, your faced with a choice. You like the band, or you don't. There is no real in between for this band
This band has plenty of potential to go somewhere in the music world, and could burst onto the scene as soon as they get some more exposure. They have a unique sound which might be comparable to some artists, but not many. The album is very well to put together, and is pleasing to listen to. Branden Langhals has a very beautiful voice which goes well with the style of music that these guys are making. The band is talented, and they did a great job with everything incorporated with this album. I think they are a band that needs to be looked out for in the next couple of months. They are going to accomplish big things as this album switches hand between people.
