You would expect a compilation from the early days of Progressive Rock to be a mixed bag. Back then, for every King Crimson there was an Ultimate Spinach. So it is here; for every Helter Skelter ("I Need You"), Incrdible Hog ("Tadpole") or Treetops ("Why Not Tonight"), there are Little Bighorn ("Just a Game"), Beggars Opera ("Sarabande") and Strange Fox ("Bring it on Home"). Like the former, good Prog is both brash and expansive; like the latter, bad Prog is ponderous and embarrassing. Prog and Psychedelic rock both swirled around the same avatars, but Prog, to its detriment, was more cerebral and self-conscious, whereas Pysch was about taking apart and reconstructing consciousness. Both are fun, and this set has some winners that ought to have been more well known. Those bands stand out because their guitars and humor stand out
