A Plus - My Last Good Deed
Ordinarily, this site is push for indie Hip Hop. So what do we do when indie Rap comes along you say? Well, at the very least give it a shot. A Plus, aka A+, has been diving in and out of the industry for a while, but now he's chained up with indie heroes, Hieroglyphics Records.
There's not too much to say about an album that has a full arsenal of beats and vocal distribution. The album flows nicely throughout all fifteen tracks, and features Souls Of Mischief on Right Quick, label boss Del Tha Funky Homosapien on Nothin' Fake/The Ultimate, and dilligently up and coming Casual. Most of the My Last Good Deed sits on predictable mass Rap beat with lyricism to match, but here and there this CD has some tracks that impress. Track eleven, featuring Jennifer Johns has a strong sound and lyricism, easily understandable amongst ANY music listener. Aside from a strong backbone beat, saxophone samples and a soulful Johns adds a nice mix for an aggressive echoed verse.
As mentioned before, veteran Casual jumps in, on track four A Beautiful Thing and this song has a serious heart and effort. APlus does something more artists in the genre should do. He comes positive... "Protecting my seed, and my queen I love life its a beautiful thing".
Produced mostly by Compound7 My Last Good Deed has a concurrent upbeat vibe, and a confidence and swagger that most Rap today wouldn't hit me in the face with. With a bit of dub influence, and some minimal diversified genre samples, I'm giving A+ a B.
