If you are like me you have heard rumblings about a progressive rock band called simply 3. I hadn't heard any of their music until the wonderful people at Metal Blade asked me if I'd like to interview the band. Needing a little background I asked for their latest album, The End Is Begun. Luckily I received the "Special Edition" that contains a bonus DVD with some live material in Worcester, MA ("Monster", "Bramfatura", "Amazed Disgrace") and two music videos for "All That Remains" and "Alien Angel". There is also a great bonus song, a cover of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play".
My jaw kind of hit the floor. I don't think of myself as a progressive metal/rock fan but after hearing The End Is Begun I am reminded why the genre does attract such a diverse crowd. This is the kind of catchy music that is complicated enough to deserve more than just a passing glance. A track like "Serpents In Disguise" could easily be radio fare but it would probably go over the average listener's head. But I found it and many other songs demanding that I turn them up. Another worthy of the volume crank is "Bleeding Me Home". Simply wonderful and different.
An obvious comparison is Dream Theater. But not so obvious might be that of Mars Volta. Yes, the aforementioned evokes images of old long-haired aging rockers. But technically there isn't much separating the three bands in style and genre (Mars Volta relishes in their indulgences with regards to complex arrangements). That is most likely why Dream Theater has invited 3 on their latest tour. Coheed and Cambria fans should also check in with 3.
Joey Eppard's vocals are beautifully done as well. He mostly sings in a falsetto style, similar to that of Claudio from Coheed. You couldn't ask for better arrangements either. They just seem to be perfect.

Three returns with another powerful alblum. The album prominently features everything 3 has become known for in the underground:Joey Eppard's amazing flamenco/slapping guitar technique, the dark and brooding atmosphere that is countered by the funk feel, Joey's smooth falsetto, and the dark lyrics that seem to be narrating another, stranger universe. These thirteen songs contain a brilliant blend that leaves something for everyone; including funk, straight up rock, progressive, and the snippets of flamenco. While Wake Pig was more akin to a collection of songs, The End Is Begun is a cohesive effort that stands out from anything recently released. Now that the band is on Metal Blade, I hope they will get the exposure and attention they deserve.
