The Brazilian Girls (only one girl and none from Brazil) have quietly been making a name for themselves for their indescribable electronica, bossa nova, jazzy style. Their latest single, the sultry Jique, (pronounced Heekay) swaggers with confident strut. While the instrumentals hit hard with what at first feels like electronic-boasting, vocalist Sabina Sciubba sings in a deep, luring tone that’s more expected in lo-fi indie recordings. Switching between languages throughout the song (Sciubba can sing in five), “Jique” feels complex and deep, with numerous layers unfolding quickly as the beat drags the listener on. And indeed, by the end of the track, we’re left wondering: what just happened here? Was this a dance-floor romp (like the MSTRKRFT Remix on the B-side of the single)? A groovy jazz piece, Latin-influenced swagger incarnate, or something altogether new? The brilliant thing about Brazilian Girls is that it wouldn’t matter what I told you I thought “Jique” was, because after one listen you’d make your own completely different interpretations. Take a peak at what Brazilian Girls are cooking up, I promise you it will strike you as ten times better than any other dance beat-centered pop out there.
