Connor Oberst is a Nebraska resident who has already done much for the indie rock world and he is only 22. He was the front-man in a band called Commander Venus and has started up is very own label called Saddle Creek. You may know of Lullaby for the Working Class. They are on his label. Bright Eyes has been around for a little while but it’s taken a while for people to stand up and take notice. That was before Lifted…or the Story Is In The Soul, Keep Your Ear To The Ground came out. Bright Eyes is now on the indie map and people are bound to watch Connor’s every move now. Lifted is a folky album but there are also pop hooks involved. That’s what makes Bright Eyes stand out. I didn’t get it at first. Lifted is an album that you need to warm up to–or I did at least. Songs are quite diverse but it’s Oberst’s vocals that tie them all together; that and his very impressive guitar work. Some of the songs are no more than his guitar and voice. The opening song starts out with an overheard conversation and then Connor breaks out in song over top of the conversation. There are some tough parts on the album but it makes it rewarding. This man has a lot of interesting things to say and Lifted is his way of getting those messages to his fans. People are watching and listening to Bright Eyes now. Connor has proven himself an important figure in indie rock.

If "Fevers And Mirrors" served as Bright Eyes' initial push at more mainstream attention and praise, "Lifted" could be seen as the moment they broke through. From underground indie darlings to underground indie darlings everybody's heard about, Bright Eyes took their transition with practiced fluidity and little change in the sounds that brought them this far. Lyrically this is Connor's pinnacle recording, with songs like "Bowl Of Oranges" and "Nothing Gets Crossed Out" possessing a soul of poetic incantation without reading too much like poetry. This is always what's been most impressive about Bright Eyes, the lyrics and also the setting of words into a frame of touching music. Nowhere will you find a better collection of Bright Eyes material than on "Lifted". Absolute quality from front to back, and the only disappointment is that the band has yet to match this benchmark.
