The legendary Duke latest is a two disc set spanning the range of his influences, from jump blues to country-tinged boogie to light funk. His fretwork with Roomful of Blues and his solo work seem to have helped him to corner the market on awards for blues guitarists. While not fiery or terrible adventurous, Robillard nevertheless has helped keep the blues light on, at least for white audiences. Tunes like “You’re Killing Me Baby,” “Steppin Out” and “Slam Hammer” are representative: fun, competent, not particularly memorable, but ok. The Duke has always seemed on the verge of breaking out of his comfort level and letting it rip, but has never really done so. He has earned a rightful place in the house band of mainstream blues, but getting real real gone for a change would not hurt. As a stylist he is spot on, authentic and knows his history. A little passion and dirty distortion would complete the monument, for me anyway.
