The Doom Loop is Original Mark Edwards’ second record in the last couple years, and here again he plays all the instruments, computers and children’s toys, in search of that magic moment when he can leave his Minnesota basement studio, and travel back in time to 1966 to sit with Brian Wilson in the sandbox and try to put the sounds in their head on paper. As with his last record, Edwards actually comes close. While his sound more than echoes his heroes, his is shaping up a signature sound of his own: shimmering pop heavily influenced by psych and drone, with the door open for tonal experimentation at will.
The title track and "Prehistoric Visions (or flying cars)" are majestic and intimate, like the pop tunes you heard as a kid and felt that this life thing might not be so bad after all. “Waltz Und Paranoia” rocks the hardest, once it gets going, flashing a little Big Star glory along the way. Edwards works under the radar in the burbs, and in Minnesota, but needs to get more daylight on him. The Doom Loop is fun, smart and risky, like most genius.
