No Shout No Calls would be my pick of the month, if we worried about such things. Electrelane is four British women who know how to rock hard and sail into the mystic. Think of The Fall or Gang of Four with female vocals, and this is it. That is a dangerous comparison, but check this out and tell me I’m wrong. I can handle it. This is jagged lo-fi with sudden bursts of out of control distortion and passion. Vocalist Verity Susman is both haunting and confrontational, her longing and frustration going head to head with whispers of hope and freedom. “The Greater” and “After the Call” drone and imbed themselves into you with smart words and jagged rhythims. “At Sea” and “Between The Wolf and The Dog” build to stop, with washes of Velvet-esque freeform riffs. There is no bad track on this record, and listening to this makes you wonder if it is possible for them to make a bad one. Majestic and rocking, and one of the best releases I’ve heard this year.
