A lot of Electronica has a bad rap. Hidden behind the superficial trappings of late-night radio "techno", anything sounding remotely electronic is lumped in as mindless music listened to by ecstacy-popping rave heads with no musical taste. Most house music doesn't do much to alter people's perception of general electronic music. Beat-heavy, slow progressing, and seemingly superficial club music- House appears to be about as far from the IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) side of the electronic spectrum someone can go. But, Gui Boratto's Chromophobia reveals that House can be just as stimulating as the most intriguing IDM release. Chromophobia creeps, nuanced and slothful, it's melody creeping up on you. It can take a few listens to actually pick apart the diverse sounds on this beat-laden album. Like every intriguing album, you’ll notice something new every time you pop Chromophobia into the CD player. Upon first listen you might just notice it's pulsing rhythm and driving beat, second listen notice it's twitches, and third listen realize there's a deep drone on certain tracks. It may not progress quickly, but after several listens Gui Boratto’s infectious album will sneak up on you, leaving you addicted. Whether you want something to dance to or something intellectually stimulating, Chromophobia fills the bill. thetestisover.blogspot.com
