New York is well-known as an art-rock breeding ground, having spawned many creative and beyond-the-norm artists and bands over the years. Add The Benzene Ring to the roster, and be sure to spend some time with their debut release under Vortex Gang Records, Breathing Water In A Dream. At times sounding like the Smashing Pumpkins in any of their various eras of sound, at times creating textural soundscapes reminiscent of Sunny Day Real Estate's finer moments, but always retaining a hypnotic, swirling and jazz-influenced direction towards soulful and potent psychadelic atmosphere. The only problem is that all the talent this 5-piece brings to the plate is too-often lost in haphazardly written songs and little ideas that never get the chance to flesh out. Interludes abound, a very large sound-picture is evident and the length of some of the tracks can become prolonged and often sound uneccesarily crammed. Opener "You And Me In The Absence Of Predators" is one of the album's best, bouncy and technically precise without sparing any melody or feel. Indeed, the band can keep you lost in their synth-bathed passages so long as the instrumentation doesn't take huge right turns; disappointingly so, they do more often than not. Progressive, profound but ultimately failing on the promises delivered, Breathing Water In A Dream is overflowing with interesting ideas, loosely tied together as songs and representing more the ability of The Benzene Ring to pull off musical backflips periodically, but does little to prove them able songwriters. But with so much promise, it's not going to be a shock when these guys hone their skills and develop an album who's bite can match the bark.
