Taking us back to the days when we were not men but were Devo, Scottish dancer/singer Calvin Harris mines smart 80's techno and pop on this surprisingly fun release. Delivered without the irony or the seriousness that would have killed the vibe, this is both tribute and extension. Had M given Gary Numan a run for his money, the resulting feud would have sounded like this. Sharp fat bottomed dance rhythms drive instrumentals like "Certified" and the title track, while bass and the necessary synth shine on "Merrymaking at My Place," "Disco Heat" and the hot "Vault Character."Dance-floor faves in a nicer world would include "Neon Rocks" and "Traffic Cops."
"I Created Disco" as a title might scare off some, but just forget your inhibitions, pretend it is 1982, and we have to worry about is the cancellation of "Square Pegs," how to get into "Porky’s," and Reagan’s finger on the button. Rumor has it that Harris has been tapped to produce the next Kylie Minogue record; at least that means there will be some great beats to go along with the eye candy. Pop Muzik!
