Burning Brides has a lot going for them. Dimitri Coats (vocals/guitar) and Melanie Campbell (bass) dropped out of art school and traveled the country finding like-minded musicians. They found them in Philadelphia in the likes of Mike Ambs. They ended up on the V2 label somehow and in no time, their debut album, Fall of the Plastic Empire was coming out (after an initial pressing on File 13). They have an original sound, incorporating many of the sludge rock elements you find in stoner rock bands but also have more pop elements ala Foo Fighters or the Pixies. Dimitri’s whole motive here is to rock out and rock hard. That’s exactly what happens on Plastic Empire. There are times when you just want a catchy riff to come and sweep you away and it seems to take forever to come but the end result is a different hard rock band that is bound to make waves. If you are looking for a rock band that is just a bit different than the other bands out there, Burning Brides is an album that you need to check out. More than once I found myself nodding my head along to the heavy grooves and the vocal screams like on the driving “Elevator.
