Again, John Prine seems like he is out of juice. His new disc, Souvenirs, is just rehashed Prine classics that he has redone in an intimate setting. It was originally intended for European release only but when Oh Boy records heard the final product and felt that fans would like to hear these renditions. I was a bit sceptical at first but actually enjoyed these versions. The production is great and Prine seems as though he is in fine form. It was recorded at the Cowboy Arms Hotel & Recording Spa in Nashville TN and produced by himself and longtime collaborator, Jim Rooney. You will find fifteen classic Prine tunes and done in an "unplugged" fashion (as if the originals didn't qualify for that title). Longtime fans will find this a must have but people just gaining interest in John Prine's songwriting might benefit a bit more with Rhino's Great Days Anthology. Let's just pray that John finds some ambition to write some new material soon. I must say that his version of "Angel From Montgomery" really is beautiful.
