It seems like forever since I discovered the fabulous Veneer, and even longer since Jose Gonzalez released it. Really, it's only been three years. Has Jose waited too long in order to keep the fans he made from the inclusion of "Heartbeats" in that Bravia commercial? It's possible but regardless the man has spent some quality time recording a beautiful follow-up to Veneer. This one is called In Our Nature and if you liked Veneer then there is absolutely nothing you won't appreciate on this album. The only thing that might get in the way is that the songs here are very similar to that of Veneer. For me, that's not a problem. That is exactly what I was craving.

In Our Nature begins with "How Low", a track that has a pretty funky beat despite the lack of percussion. Yes, Jose has opted for an acoustic only album once again. What better way to get intimate with Jose's dexterous guitar playing. He has to be commended for this. He could have gone the Elliott Smith route and went with a bigger production but instead he remained true to his sound.

"Down The Line" keeps that fairly upbeat feel with Gonzalez sounding bright himself. One of my favorites is "Killing For Love", a track that has some strong vocals with lovely harmonies and a hypnotic guitar. The title track is a little more laid back. "Teardrop" is a cover of Massive Attack's wonderful song. It's got "Heartbeats" potential if included in the right context. "Abram" is a great song too, I just found it a little too short. And another favorite is "Time To Send Someone Away", in which Gonzalez has some wonderful vocal play.

In Our Nature is a logical continuation to Veneer. Jose kept it safe and I found it very rewarding. I would argue that Jose is one of the masters of fingerstyle guitar of today. Just amazing. It helps that he has a charming and hypnotic voice. My rating may change over the coming weeks as I get more face-time with the album.
