Clair De Lune is a band that, with Assisted Living, proves not only that Minneapolis will forever be turning out great bands, but that there is some life left in emo, when used for color not body. Mostly this is hot hot guitar driven rock, with riffs and punk attitude aplenty, but with various anthemic elements, especially vocally and in the rhythm section, that enhance rather than take over and lame-out the action. The odds chord changes on “Airplanes” and “This City Is A Model, But We Are Not Model Citizens” show the band to have the sort of chops that will serve them well with bolder moves down the road.
“Criminal,” “I’m a People Person” and “Killjoy” continue the Minneapolis tradition of hard, in your face songs with a fragile heart underneath all the bluster. “Assisted Living” ought to win a lot of notice for Clair De Lune, and it will all be well-deserved. This is a band that can rock and wear their hearts on their sleeves that old fashioned way: one their own terms.
