It's been a great year for Jesu. The band is picking up steam and fans just the same. Conqueror was another critically acclaimed album and Justin and his Jesu road crew have been touring relentlessly (I would love to see them live). So hot on the heels of Conquerer is a new EP called Lifeline. We are given 4 songs that bookend Conqueror quite nicely. Justin takes the same sludgy melodic approach here as he did with the album and gives us 4 more great tracks.
The title track is the first and it really opens the EP up. But I found "You Wear Their Masks" to be the best track on the EP. Jarboe (Swans) lends her lyrics and voice to "Storm Comin On", giving us a nice break from Broadrick's monochromatic vocals. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of this collaboration on the next Jesu. "End Of The Road" is just that, the closing song of another Jesu chapter. It returns with more sonics but ends up being quite a nice, easy going track. It would fit perfectly as a soundtrack for a beautiful sweeping landscape shot.
With the sonic intensity that Broadrick is able to conjure up I would liken them to a My Bloody Valentine for the new millennium. The Lifeline EP is every bit as essential for any Jesu fan than the full-lengths. I might leave the Silver EP and choose this one instead.
