End of Level Boss salt their stoner metal with odd chord changes and jagged, almost prog-rock riffs. The result is stoner metal that delivers all the munchy goodies you expect, but throws in a few challenges too. Inside The Difference Engine, then, is a great, a record that pleases but pushes its listener toward new tangents.
Fear not: there is sludge and raspy discord; there is no mistaking tracks like “Selfishnegativibemerchant” and “Mr. Dinosaur is Lost” with Yes. But songs like “Words Have No Meaning” and “Connortations” open the space a little, tease the ears with different jams. Like Kiss showed with “Destroyer,” End of Level Boss show that they have the chops to deliver much more than the usual if they wanted to. And Heck Armstrong and the boys sure do deliver more than the usual here. This record is relentless and sluggish both, and whip-smart. While Armstrong’s vocals can be grating at times, the music is never less than inspired satisfying to those who love their Crunch, and to those who love it with a little extra.
