Filmmaker and musician David Michalak seems to have formed Ghost in the House as a vehicle for bringing to life his visions of films as yet unmade. Yet the music here is not merely a blueprint for some future expression; the slightly surreal soundscapes here, grounded in the present by oboe, gongs, and especially the lap steel guitar work by Michalak himself, are complete and evocative in and of themselves. “Beehive Memory” “Nascolepsy” “Knife in the Fog” and others evoke confusing but curious moments of insight and presence, as if seeing a familiar place or thing in the new perspective of fatigue or during strange weather has enough power to change one’s view of the world. The seven tracks on this debut by Ghost in the House not only suggest that it can, but that it just might be our role to keep looking with new eyes at what is around us. That is the kind of awareness that can make any moment perfect to get on film.
