It's obvious that Mr. Collett isn''t trying to do anything radically new to music; he's just trying to do what he knows best well. It just makes me think of Bob Dylan. The songs are well composed, and fairly straightforward, so that simplicity works in his favor. It's the melodic ad-libs and southern, whimpering draw at the end of his lines that force reference to Bob. I don't remember feeling that way when I listened to Broken Social Scene. So in a way, I've been let down.
On the up side, this album is instrumentally strong & very melodic. It reviles in 70's rock (Jackson Brown & The Eagles-esque). The flow is maintained throughout, so you don't have to skip around to find the ones with the good rhythms. As per usual, the slower, more heartbreak songs are the last leg of the work; and are done exceptionally well.
