Nothing Makes Any Sense is one long live track that effortlessly channels many of the signposts of improvisational guitar, from the Carnatic drone and minimal quiver, to the face-scraping explosions of noise. What makes this a grail of sorts beyond the history lesson is the quartet of alchemists behind it. Nels Cline, Lee Ranaldo and Alan Licht have expanded the possibilities of guitar more than anyone in the last thrityt years with the exceptions of Derek Bailey, Fred Frith and Rhys Chatham. Carlos Giffoni’s synth and ambient drone work have set the standard for that genre. As a unit, they create a confident, exuberant and ferocious exploration that ought to make you wet yourself in gratitude. Awe-struck is not the word to describe my reaction; No Fun, quietly unless you have been paying attention, has become one the prime places to find fearless music. Let your guard down and jump at the chance to check this one out.
