Last American Buffalo bring us their self titled debut with a mixed sound. And when I say mixed, I mean for both good and bad: upbeat throwbacks, pensive ballads, and sometimes just plain uninteresting tunes. This record makes me think of Spoon and The Shins without quite the amount of presence and skill necessary to hold your own in the somewhat irritating fad of sixties-meets-dance-punk in indie rock. Often, otherwise perfectly listenable songs are just too damn long, with others relying on a bland hook with hit or miss lyrics that sometimes encourage you to sing along, and other times simply fail to pull you in. However, the band still maintains its fair share of a couple of decently catchy songs, and two acoustic tracks reveal a potential that much of this record doesn’t manage to highlight. But just maybe there’s some growing room for these guys. If we can squeeze out four quality tunes from a debut, maybe their next effort will have a bit more to offer. I think we can hold a bit of hope for Last American Buffalo.
