Internal Salvation by The Unseen is another batch of thirteen powerful tracks by one of the biggest bands in America’s current punk scene. Having made a pleasant return from whatever their god-awful previous album was, this is a band I have always placed a cut above other veteran punk bands like The Casualties and Rancid or newcomers like Static Line. Maybe it’s the resemblance their music bears to eighties hardcore, but the raw energy of the spirit paired with a lightly polished execution makes them a little more interesting than your average punk band. Internal Salvation contains highly political subject matter ranging from the plight of the homeless (my favorite track, “Such Tragedy”) to that unfortunate standby, the war in Iraq. Other key tracks include “At Point Break,” “Torn and Shattered,” and “In Your Place.” No one track on this album will leave you bored, but not even The Unseen can overcome that pitfall of punk rock: formula. Personally, it’s something that just can’t hold my interest for more than a few minutes at a time, but this won’t be a problem for any serious punk fan. And maybe this won’t hold up to their earlier work, but really, what can?
