Formed in 1993 with a desire to channel bands like the Velvets and Stooges combined with a little No Wave into something truly beastly, Outrageous Cherry have succeeded in every way. This rerelease of their debut is full of dark power, from lo-fi pop to grinding riff-happy sludge, all under the leadership of guitarist/vocalist Matthew Smith. Subsequent OC discs have only deepened a sound that has used the past as springboard to even deeper personal expression. This debut is smart and assured all the way through, from the opening drone of “Pale Frail Lovely One” to the immense closer “You Weren’t Meant for This.” In between, tracks like “Til I Run Out,” “It Always Rains” and “Ace 100” are reminders of what a powerful classic band these guys were from the get-go. Subsequent releases, equally under the radar, show a progression of insight and daring that are hallmarks of the best bands. Outrageous Cherry are one of the best bands, and kudos to Scratch for rereleasing the one that started it all off.
