Don’t come here expecting a band that cares about staying in tune, keeping the same riff throughout the same song, or, maybe, even caring about you. Psychedelic Horseshit play noisy psych drone that marches to whatever the fuck it feels at the moment. “Magic Flower Droned,” therefore, is sloppy, glorious, and infuriating. That means that, given that there are thirteen songs here, some newbies might check out early; yep, even big fans might skip a few by the end as well. Like the Replacements or Black Lips or The Fall before them, Psychedelic Horseshit use sloppiness and chaos to reach deep; there are moments here where a well placed riff or cascade says more than a hundred words. Not that there aren’t any lyrics: on many songs, especially “New Wave Hippies,” signer/guitarist Matt Whitehurst rants coherently about shallow consumers, posers and the like. But it is sonically where the more telling barbs are made.“What’s in Store,” “Portals” and “Radar Fences Again” rage and teeter to the brink of falling apart; it is that risk that brings the noise and shows the trio from Cleveland to be deadly serious about creating a true sonic world. They have, and it is their own. The half-assed production and erratic arrangements are beside the point. They may turn some people away, but those that hang are rewarded well.
