Tom Waits - Alice
For Tom's second album (actually released on the same date) released this year, Tom Waits returns to his collaboration partner, Kathleen Brennan, to provide another amazing album. "Alice", Tom says, "is adult songs for children, or children songs for adults. It's a maelstrom or fever-dream, a tone poem, with torch songs and waltzes-an odyssey in dream logic and nonsense." If I would have to pick my favorite out of the two recently released albums I would say that Blood Money takes a bit of a lead, but only by a bit. There are a few more instantly memorable songs on Blood Money but Alice holds up a bit more in the whole. Alice was originally done as an avant-garde opera done in 1992. It was loosely based on Lewis Carroll's obsession with Alice Liddell who in turn inspired the Alice in Wonderland story. There is plenty of fantastical music here for the dreamer and the true Waits fan will fully appreciate what Tom and his co-writer, Kathleen Brennan, have done and it is a welcome relief to most fans that Tom has finally decided to record these amazing songs.
