I came across The Whigs on iTunes doing a search for an Oasis song, "Half the World Away." When I heard their song (with the same name) I was floored. Comparisons to The Replacements have been drawn from all kinds of reviews, and I see where they're coming from - but The Whigs stand alone. It's true, they are true to the spirit of rock and roll, being that this album is entirely DIY garage distribution, grit... but what's gonna sell is the highly marketable melodies (instruments & vocals). Parker has an amazing voice that is gonna drop your gf's panties and make you bang your head. Going full circle, "Half the World Away" has one of the BEST guitar solos I've heard, period. "Written Invitation" was one of NPR's picks of the week. And "Technology" is undeniably catchy. Athens, Georgia should be proud.
