Soul Coughing. A sadly underrated band but still remains in the hearts and minds of many. Mike Doughty was the clever lyricist behind the great band and now with his follow up to 2005's great Houghty Melodic he is here to grace our ears once again. Sure, Mike can be quirky but all musicians are in some way. Mike just makes it readily apparent in lyrics and song titles like "27 Jennifers" (I went to school with 27 Jennifers). The cool "Put It Down" gets some of the groovy lyrical capability of Doughty. Just the way he kind of makes the lyrics into the main beat focal point is the charm of Mike. I love the feel of "More Bacon Than The Pan Can Handle". "I Wrote A Song About Your Car" is probably the most straightforward song on Golden Delicious, a great track. "I got the drop on you" is a quieter song. He carries this mellower touch onto "Wednesday (Contra La Puerta)" but manages to inject a bit of jazzy flavor into the song. If you are looking for one of those songs to convert people into Doughty fans, look no further than the charming "Like A Luminous Girl". It is slightly dark but has a great outlook.
Really, if you like good rhythms them you need to look into Mike Doughty. Golden Delicious is as good a place to start as any. If you like what you hear then check into Soul Coughing, any album. They are all premium classics.

Golden Delicious isn't much of a step forward for Mike Doughty, who seems to be ever searching for HIS sound or HIS place in music since the fall of Soul Coughing. His last few albums, he's hovered about experimenting rhythmically, sharpening his lyrical attack, and it's been very hit and miss.
It's true that Golden Delicious suffers from some of the same pitfalls of his previous solo albums, namely songs that have a tendency to completely fall apart (see the last 1 1/2 minutes of the otherwise awesome "Put It Down"), but still, but HIS sound finally seems to have coalesced.
Doughty is never better than when he's belting out a serenade to some unnamed lover. Not the typical love-you-so-much kind of song, but that REAL kind of love that he sings about in "I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep on Dancing" The line "I love your baby fat/ Your crooked nose is where its at," while simplistic at a glance, speaks volumes for his honesty as a writer and his pipeline connection to his intent as a lyricist, without getting to flowery.
Indeed this example - and countless others that fill the lyrics of the songs on Golden Delicious - gives us a window into his process; that the time he spent since Soul Coughing has seemed to have been an reductive exploration of his own music; an ongoing sojourn to truly bring out the music in his head in the most unfiltered way possible.
This latest album is flawed and sometimes a little below the lofty standards that Doughty's best works have set, but it's incredibly catchy, fun and painfully honest. He hasn't quite become the artist that he's hinted that he could be, but Golden Delicious is a step in the right direction.
