Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Your Eyes is a mostly somber affair. This third release by guitarist Mike Moya, aka Hrsta, (Godspeed You! Black Emperor), does offer new additions to the sonic palette to make this brand of brooding psych-folk appealing and, at times, hypnotic.
Joined again on keys by Brooke Crouser (Jackie-O-Motherfucker) and a solid rhythm section, Moya explores the dark drones, with the atmosphere ranging from the glacial “Beau Village” to the slow shimmer as prelude to exploding “Kotori.” Along the way there are tunes that both creep and roar (“Orchard”). There is even a pretty decent cover of the Bee Gees’ “Holiday.” “Tomorrow Winter Comes” is also a standout.
Hrsta has taken on a life of its own, a side-project becoming full and confident. With majestic highs and lows that suggest depth not despair, Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Your Eyes is Hrsta’s best to date.
