By deftly blending some choice alt-rock quotes into their heavy wall of sound, Envy create a blast of power that is surprisingly melodic. Abysmal is a four song EP, fresh on the heels of their fourth release, “Insomniac Doze.” That record was slower and more expressionistic than their earlier pile-driving sets, and this EP delivers a good blending of their sound. With tasteful touches of emo and shoegazing, “A Road of Winds the Water Builds,” “All That’s Left Has Gone To Sleep” and the rest manage a consistent growl with a soft heart. Japan’s Envy has been learning the ropes with a lot of touring and a fairly prolific recorded output. “abysmal” is a good sampler for the uninitiated, as well as a sign of deeper maturity of the band’s sound. The next release ought to be a killer. Abysmal will also be released on vinyl.
