Recorded at his farmhouse in rural British Columbia, this latest in the long and classic career of Herald Nix is among his best. For over twenty years, he has been laying down some rough but wise honky-tonk-rock that is literate and fun, sly and ballsy. Everybody Loves You is no exception. “Outside the Death House” manages to be creepy and hopeful at once; “Nobody’s Laughing Now” and “Gonna Be A Playboy” are two sides of the lyrical coin; Nix litters his songs with real characters who, in their confused, noir-ish way, face the world head on. “Come on Dog” is among the best songs he’s written, and that is saying a lot. Herald Nix is stuck in that sad position of legend who deserves to be huge, but can’t hit the jackpot. If it stays that way, be will end up leaving behind a slab of great raw, poetic songs that will be studied by someone who hopefully will finally help give the man his due. If he doesn’t hit it big in this lifetime, there will be others.
