Daptone is one of the glorious labels. A small operation from Brooklyn, they have been cranking out hardcore funk and soul for a while now, and this release is a chance for them to celebrate and to pat themselves on the back. The set consists of one disc of originals by label star Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, The Boudos Band, The Sugarman Three & Co., the Daktaris, among others. The disc of remixes is a hot take on the originals by the likes of Kenny Dope, Large Professor, Wale, and the legendary Hank Shocklee. The originals are a brilliant mix of afropop, 60’s soul, funk and R &B. Highlight tracks include Jones’ “Stranded in Your Love “ (the remix of this by Cool Calm Pete is also killer), Daktaris’ “Eltsuhg Ibal Lasiti” and “Chicago Falcon” by Budos Band. The Daptone sound is raw and full of life and humor—its is sexy as hell too. Scion is a production company that has over the years put together mixes for many a label, but I bet they never had such a collection of monster tracks to choose from as here. Other acts like Kanye West and the shitty poser Amy Winehouse have borrowed from the Daptone sound recently, with shaky results. This double disc set is the real deal. A must have.
