Cousteau is a bit of an anomaly in these days of rock and electronica. The British band plays a type of adult pop music that is rarely heard these days. It is along the lines of Roxy Music or Spandeau Ballet with orchestral arrangements and melancholy choruses that are heartfelt and sincere. Cousteau could almost come across as soundtrack music but there is so much thought put into the music that it’s so much more. Fellow Brits, the Tindersticks are close in comparison but Cousteau happens to be a little more floaty and airy. While this type of music could easily come off as cheese, it doesn’t. Liam McKahey and the other three members have strategically planned it that way. Pianos are used very cleverly in ways that you just barely notice them. While string arrangements are the order of the day on many tracks. The production is lush and the songwriting is superb. Sirena is an album for late at night. One of those albums that you turn down the lights and turn up the volume while you sink into your easy chair and start dreaming…
