The Bees (as they're known in the UK) have a very diverse offering on this album. There is a rich blend of influences, and the result is some kind of rock/psych/head nod that can suit any mood.
"Octopus" slides open with a bottle-necking, organ jumping "Who Cares What the Question Is?" that is, in my opinion, reminiscent of The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields" + "Octopus' Garden." Sounds dangerous, but it works.Thankfully, they choose not to stay there. "Octopus" evolves into deep bass strums, jazzy rhythms, topped with layered horns & vocals. They harmonize much like bands did back in 70's rock and soul. "Left Foot Stepdown" and "Stand" convey this beatnik madness. There aren't any obvious down points to the album. When The Bees choose to slow down, it comes out like an English man singing Sam Cooke. "Octopus" is going to generate some kind of replay value for anybody.
