Peterson - In The House
Courtesy of Giant Step
In 2008, the UK's Radio One Worldwide DJ Gilles Peterson continues to criss-cross the planet, hopping from continent to continent, playing dozens of mind expanding club and festival sessions. Along with a consistent flow of compilation albums, like his deep Gilles Person Digs America II for California's Ubiquity Records, he is responsible for a wave of new music from his own independent Brownswood imprint. Anyone who has sat in on a live'n'direct Worldwide broadcast will testify that his alignment of pent up energy, deep knowledge and commitment to new music makes him capable of uniting totally unique diverse musical forces, creating a deeply soulful, positive and ever-expansive vibe.
Gilles is irrepressibly enthusiastic about his compilation for Defected, and he readily admits that the music has taken him right back to his soul boy roots in South London and draws on over two decades of deep DJ experiences. For his take on the contemporary house scene you simply need to touch down on Disc 1, a soulful and upfront collection of wickedly eclectic records from his global travels. There's Mario Vidis, Phil Asher (Phlash & friends) and "a really big tune by Simbad feat. Abdul Shylion called 'Supersonic Revelation.'" CD2 has more Peterson gems, showing the true broadness of his musical tastes. His soul boy and disco sides show up with inclusions of records like Earth, Wind & Fire's "Let Your Feelings Show" and A Taste Of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie" where he never stops waxing lyrical about how good the live drum production is (on a record that predates drum machines). That brings us to CD 3, a specially commissioned array of unmixed tracks by some of his closest contemporaries DJ Sneak, Karizma, Switch, Carl Craig and others. Gilles Peterson is deep in the house and of his selection he declares, "I know it's a cliché, but it's all about the passion. Look, we're here, listening to Jon Lucien's 'Mi Vida' and I'm loving it!"
