Eric Bachman is back with his third proper album as Crooked Fingers. One thing that Eric hasn’t chosen to do is break out of his melancholic frame of mind. His songs have a depressing overtone to them but somehow the listener is left with a ray of hope. Crooked Fingers is made up of many musicians consisting of upright bass, mandolin, lap steel, trumpet, violin, cello, and all the instruments that Eric plays. The arrangements are sparse at times while others it breaks out in a beautiful harmony. The album starts out with one of the more upbeat tracks called “Big Darkness. It bounces along very impressively only to go into one of the best lullabies I’ve heard, “Don’t Say A Word. His throaty whisper coaxes you in to listen to Bachman’s issues. Listen to Red Devil Dawn late at night, all alone, on your headphones and tell me a chill doesn’t go down your spine. I’m not sure if it’s all in the way he sings or the way he arranges his songs, but I do know that it’s the Crooked Fingers and there is nothing like the feeling of finding a favorite album by a favorite band. Wow, I made it through without mentioning Archers of Loaf…oh, not quite. Is it my imagination or does the horn line in “Sweet Marie remind you of “The Tide Is High by Blondie?
