After Rob Garza's hideous Dust Galaxy project I had to reach back for a Thievery Corporation album in order to rid myself of the awful taste he left in my mouth. The mix album Versions is a couple years old now but rest assured it is every bit as essential as their artist albums. Versions includes great reworkings of songs by Transglobal Underground, The Doors, Herb Alpert, Nouvelle Vague, Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Sarah McLachlan, Wax Poetic (w/ Norah Jones), Anoushka Shankar and quite a few others. Just from that artist list you can tell that nothing scares the Rob Garza and Eric Hilton duo.
Some highlights include "The Girl's Insane" from The Januaries as well as the unsuspecting Doors classic "Strange Days".
Not to be left out, the boys throw in 3 of their own originals into the mix to help flesh out the album. The best one of the three is "Originality" with vocals by Sister Nancy.
Versions is a wonderful companion piece to their Abductions and Reconstructions remix album from 1999. A well done downtempo dub-y mix is always welcome.
