I'm not really sure if it should be Five or 5ive, whatever the spelling this band is amazing. Well, not really a band but a duo but you'd never guess that after listening to this massively thick and heavy disc. 5ive consists of Ben Carr (guitars) and Charlie Harrold (Drums). Huge, gigantic riffs fill your soul with the hope and understanding that they may get as popular as Isis or Pelican. Oh wait. These guys have been around just as long and they aren't getting the credit they deserve. Call it progressive metal, stoner rock, drone metal, sludge metal, whatever you like, this is music that is meant to be listened to loud. One of the points on the bio sheet states "5ive were a two piece with no vocalist or bass player long before being instrumental and having an unorthodox band assemblage became cool" and that "5ive have Kyuss style guitar tone without the shitty vocals". That last one is bang on. Big, thick, fuzzy, psychedelic guitars make for a lovely pulverizing display of what two people can accomplish.

Hesperus is 5ive's third album and each just seem to be getting better and better with age. "Gulls" opens the album and until the drums kick in about 45 seconds in you aren't really sure what you are getting into. But if you stand the test of this track then you should be sold on the rest of the album. They slow down ever slightly on the second track "Big Sea" but not for long. They get into a glorious groove a bit later on in the song.

You want epic? Try "News II" and it's glorious 12+ minutes of intensely dark and grooving jams.

By all means, Isis and Pelican fans, hell even Neurosis fans should jump on Hesperus. This is a great album that should make a mark for 5ive (five, whatever).

D isn't kidding when he says their jams are dark.

The distortion isn't as heavy as Isis or Rosetta but that is necessary in order to be able to hear the intricacies of their instrumentation. Some of their progressions are dark enough to justify fear. They truly do know how to capture a feeling in a song and I'd go so far as to call "dark" an understatement of the mood they're trying to portray.

Great album.
