Typically, I'm not a big fan of the singer/songwriter genre except for few exceptions. Kiff Gallagher has become one of those exceptions with his 2006 release You Can't Keep it Down. Whilst listening I thought of Jamie Cullum, another of my exceptions. Kiff's music sounds like Jamie Cullum's soulful side rather than his jazzy side. The album also features his mellow vocal range which speaks for itself. He doesn't have a broad vocal range exhibited through the album but the voice he exudes in the album is very appropriate for the genre. He is also a talented pianist and his soulful progressions make for a great listen.
Most of the songs feature the typical upbeat pop style which you can generally find with most solo artists of his genre. However, some songs such as "Your Body" feature a progression that seems a bit darker and more refined than a typical pop song. Though he can be classified deep within the soul genre, he shows a bit of jazz in his music.
Of the singer/songwriter's that I've heard, Kiff Gallagher is clearly one of the more talented musicians in the group and is worth a listen. If you find yourself moved by soul music, you won't be able to put down You Can't Keep it Down.
