First off, props to the fellas in Gray Beast for sending me a promo copy of their still-fresh release "The Album That Killed It's Parents". It's always encouraging to see bands go out of their way to see their music spread far and wide. After spending a little time with the songs featured on GB's myspace, I just had to have a copy of the record and I'm glad to say the overall product shines bright indeed.

What we have here is a collaboration between two musicians, both having worked together within the indie scene in the past, not to mention being life-long friends. That sort of chemistry is what shines through the whole of "The Album That Killed It's Parents", and it's a neccesary attribute for the sly combinations of sounds they deliver. On a foundation of electronica and moody, Modest Mouse-esque indie rock, Gray Beast build up atmosphere with breezy R&B grooves and jazzy texturing. The album seems to go by all too fast, and every song offers it's fair share of flair, moody bliss and darker themes. Mature, expressive and progressive without saying so, Gray Beast are a force to be reckoned with.

No stinkers within these 9 tracks, no sir. Here you've got a wonderful record to spin while spending some quality time with your signifigant other (perhaps between the sheets...my intitial reaction to the album was "this is baby-making music for geeks!"). It's the kind of record you'll feel comfortable listening to during your more comfortable moments, even despite the darker nature of some of the material. The only way Gray Beast could possibly improve, in my mind, is to grow even more experimental, perhaps stretching some of their ideas out a little longer. Minor complaints; major accomplishment for Gray Beast.
