As Ryan Shelkett’s previous band, Cross My Heart, was by-the-book emo rock at it’s finest, so it goes with his new project, Dead Red Sea. His voice is the familiar entity here but the songs show a maturing young man with intense emotions and aching vocals. Dead Red Sea builds up waves of sound and then fades away into nothingness at the turn of a dime. Ryan has a good ear for vacant spaces while he is also capable of rocking out. His voice sounds frail and weak at time (could possibly annoy some possible listeners) but he can raise it up to wallop the un-expecting listener over the head. Although Dead Red Sea may not be the finest album on the stellar Deep Elm label, it does find comfort in the similar bands that find Deep Elm home. Cross My Heart listeners will be comforted in knowing that Ryan Shelkett hasn’t lost his songwriting abilities.
